See my response...Unknown March 14, 2019 at 7:07 AM

See my response to S Britt above. I guess your mileage may vary, but the couple of times that I've gone onto a strict keto dietary regimen I found that going cold turkey on carb rich foods the easiest and fastest way to lose the craving for carbs.

I describe 'carb hunger' as the flesh eating plant in the movie Little Shop of Horrors demanding to be fed constantly. If you don't break out of that, it may torture you forever. 'Keto hunger' on the other hand is sort of like the accountant announcing at the monthly board meeting that last month's outgo exceeded income and we had to dip into the strategic reserve to make up the difference. A very different experience.

Don't fool yourself, if you don't get off carbs at least long enough to get beyond carb hunger you may never get fat adapted. The fastest way to do it is a 3-4 day water fast. The first couple of days may be very difficult, but once keto hunger replaces carb hunger, you will be in a new place.

MichaelMichael Wassilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14421260191948124693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-31813067525148399462019-03-17T15:30:45.939-04:002019-03-17T15:30:45.939-04:00Hi, S Britt!
I'm a 73 (almost 74) male. I'...Hi, S Britt!

I'm a 73 (almost 74) male. I've been on nutritional keto this time around for a bit over two years. I did it a few years ago for a couple of years, but went off because I made the mistake of eating 'too rich' (ie $$)! Not making the same mistake again.

For all of my life prior, I loved the following carbs: ice cream, frozen yogurt, bread, potatoes, fruits and juices, ALL pastas, pizza, beer (been a beer-maker all my life!). I never cared much for sweets other than ice cream, though. When I went keto this time I went completely 'cold turkey' for a year on all of the above plus every other carb rich food I had been eating before. Didn't miss it a bit! Lost about 35 pounds in the first two and half months, although that was not my primary goal. I've weighed 150 pounds give or take a couple since that initial loss. Weight has never been an issue for me fortunately, but I feel lots better at 150 than at 185!

I do not think I have had 'to resign myself' to no carbs. I seldom eat carb rich foods any more because I have little or no desire to eat them. I've discovered much better tasting and satisfying fat and protein rich foods. I think it's important when starting out on the road to fat adaptation and nutritional keto to 'just do it' and don't look back. My experience was that once I got fat adapted, the desire for carbs just sort of evaporated. I still like a beer once in a while!

I start each day with 'keto coffee' and it's the highlight of the day for me! I don't make a so-called 'fat bomb'. My keto coffee includes a mix of fats and proteins to my current macro ratios. Gets me started on the day's fat burning! Includes MCT oil for an immediate short term 'burst' and coconut oil and whipping cream for the longer term.

I'm reading this post because for the past two-three months I've been indulging in a Dairy Queen ice cream cone 2 or 3 times per week either before or after my shift at Walmart. I have not experienced any negative consequences for doing so. The glucose from those cones is burned out in 3-4 hours max. Then it's back to fat burning. How do I know?

I'm still 150 pounds. I've been eating 2800 calories daily (2300-2400 calories of fat) for the better part of the past year. If I was not burning all that fat, I'm sure I would now weigh a lot more than 150!

So this is great journey of discovery for me and I'm enjoying it bigly! Oh and by the way, if you haven't yet discovered Bok Choy, I highly recommend it. It's one of the most nutritious things you can eat and 'you won't believe it's almost no carb'.

MichaelMichael Wassilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14421260191948124693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-45918069530678103822019-03-14T07:07:08.108-04:002019-03-14T07:07:08.108-04:00Thank you for the article. I had such a hard time on 20g carbs/day, I never got to that feeling of euphoria or energy, even though I ate healthy green veggies and meats for 3 weeks, with some intermittent fasting. During PMS, I felt awful, it was something like the Keto flu maybe, but it wasn't going away, even though I was drinking broth/salt/minerals...it just seemed my body was not doing well in long term ketosis, it was making me sick. I will now take a cheat day and titrate my carbs upwards, until it feels right for my body to maintain. Still LC, but not as intense. I don't eat sugar or grains, do eat a lot of protein, and no longer pour on extra olive oil, butter, etc. I try to drink coffee black but don't always succeed (adding heavy cream and artificial sweetener). I know I need to use keto, and I'm absolutely sure this way of eating is the way to go. I'm 72, with a history of dementia in both of my parents' families. I also have hypothyroidism, for which I take a pill. Do I need to resign myself to no carbs--ie., only meat, fish, eggs, and extremely low-carb vegetables?

You are the brightest light on the keto horizon, but no surprise there: you majored in creative writing.
