Your...Hi Meagan, don't worry about the ketones. Your body is mostly using FAT, and that's what you want! You're not secreting them all out. There are plenty of ketones in your blodstream that your cells will use, and as I said, the more important thing is that your body is fueling itself with FAT, and the ketones are your proof that that is happening. The ketones are the *result* of you breaking down fat, not the cause, so don't stress about your ketone levels.

If it's only been 3 weeks, BE PATIENT. If you're seeing urine ketones, you are where you need to be, so just stay the course. Not everyone gets magical fat loss overnight. Sometimes it takes time for things to kick in. It's also impossible for me to comment on your fat loss (or lack thereof) without knowing your age, height, starting weight, and whether you are taking any medications or dealing with any health problems. Do you "need" to lose fat? Are you significantly overweight? I can't comment in stubborn fat loss without knowing more about your situation and where you're starting from. (Feel free to email me privately - use the "contact me" form on the site.)

One piece of advice: don't make the mistake of eating too much fat. It *is* possible to over-consume dietary fat on a ketogenic diet. The more fat on your plate, the less of a need your body has to tap into its stored fat for fuel: http://www.tuitnutrition.com/2017/08/how-to-cut-fat-on-keto.htmlTuit Nutritionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708859914305178756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-73575634296107868502018-04-03T13:59:29.280-04:002018-04-03T13:59:29.280-04:00So thankful for your articles! This might be a silly question, but what exactly will cause my to actually use the ketones as fuel? Right now I worry that I am just secreting them all out. My energy has increased and my appetite has been reduced. Overall, I feel great! Just not having much luck with fat loss or even water weight loss. Do I just need to stick with it for longer? I am eating more than in the past- was a no fat- high stressed job-little eater-bad sleep. Now good sleep, still no so big eater, carbs <20 etc... not an inch of fat lost till now... but no gain. I just do not know. I was very very thin, for many many years, than life hardships high cortisol sustained 20 years of unabatted stress.. covered me with a layer of fat which is just not moving...I am now plump and do not feel well. I wonder when I am going to adapt... if ever...however I am feeling great-for all other aspects. Had some water retention starting month 4, and palpitations, which were corrected with some magnesium . Other than that.. fat layer is there and does not seem to want to separate from me:-(Ninahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09460760961085746383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-59837956669921603872018-01-18T01:19:06.952-05:002018-01-18T01:19:06.952-05:00Hey Mike, thanks for reading. More like just plain *awful.* Some people say "metallic," but the simple truth is, it's acetone. There are three types of ketones -- beta-hydroxybutyrate (which the blood meters measure), acetoacetate (which the urine strips measure), and acetone, which the breath ketone meters measure. If your breath tastes like nail polish remover, that's why. ;-) It's acetone. It might bother your spouse and close friends, but in terms of you being in ketosis, it's a good sign. A sugar-free breath mint of piece of gum now and then won't kill ya. ;DTuit Nutritionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708859914305178756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-56899949630793722822018-01-17T22:30:00.555-05:002018-01-17T22:30:00.555-05:00Your blog has been a fun read and thank you for th...Your blog has been a fun read and thank you for the content. I don’t know if you or any of your readers exsperience this but I know when I’m in full blown ketosis by my breath “Keto Breath”. Many articles I read describe it as a “floral sweet taste”. I would say for sure I have this taste, though my wife would beg to differ it being sweet or floral like. Do you have any data or information going over the science on the dreaded “Keto Breath”? I was low carb back then, but not keto (same as now - low carb, but not strictly ketgenic) - but nevertheless, I avoided Gatorade as I just plain think it's gross and the only time I've ever used it was for marathon training a long, long time ago (before y low carb days), and in basic training, when they *made us* drink it. ;-)

So, no, the Gatorade had nothing to do with it, but you're a smart cookie to ask the question. My life was different in a number of ways at that time that I think, taken together, account for why I felt so wonderful. If I could put *those* in a bottle and swig some now, I'd be all over it. ;DTuit Nutritionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708859914305178756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-61373946721083972232017-08-17T15:29:16.978-04:002017-08-17T15:29:16.978-04:00Hey, Amy, this is _way_ down in the details, but.....Hey, Amy, this is _way_ down in the details, but... we know that one of the big hurdles new keto-ers encounter is feeling crappy because not getting enough of crucial electrolytes. When you mentioned Balad, my ears perked up. My husband was stationed there a few years before you. He has frequently mentioned there being an endless supply of Gatorade, aka electrolyte juice :-) If that was still the case when you were there, were you swigging it too? Do you think that was another factor that helped you? However, 2 weeks in on 120p/70f/20c and not seeing any movement in body fat (well 2 lbs), eating more calories now than in the past(avg now about 11-1200))(Dr says I should be less than what I used to eat which was under 900), natural aversion to fats in general since 1980, but enjoy protein & seemingly some more energy, have PTSD for many years which caused me to go from 160 & size 16 (great for me) to as high as sz 28 in a few yrs, now down to sz 22. I think clothing sizes are a lie, Wondering who can advice me on whether I need to cut calories by cutting down on fats (which I don't like) & protein or stick to plan & give it more time or come to a point that I will be fat forever & give up....Please forward this to anyone who might be able to help me!! I do meet the protein part most days but avg less 10-20 in fat most time & around 19-25 carbs. I try but carbs in veges sneak up on me. pebbles1157@gmail.com Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17951750741579535992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-1439089940498959582017-04-21T18:48:17.859-04:002017-04-21T18:48:17.859-04:00These articles are awesome and you are hilarious (...These articles are awesome and you are hilarious (and smart)! Ketones DO NOT MATTER, for most people. There are situations, of course, where measuring them is important, but for most people just trying to lose weight and be healthy overall, it's a waste of time and money, and drives people completely crazy when they really don't know what the numbers even mean, and don't have any appreciation for the complex biochemical mechanisms at work in regulating ketone levels.Tuit Nutritionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708859914305178756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-57431155754888106052017-03-04T01:51:41.115-05:002017-03-04T01:51:41.115-05:00This has to be one of my favorite post ever! I think when we first start keto it's natural to focus so heavily on ketosis because of the dogma out there. You are in ketosis or you are out! As we hopefully study up on our biology and nutrition along with experience we evolve to start to understand the processes of our bodies and its not all black and white and the grey area can be effective as well and it's really about the big picture and a long term adaptable lifestyle. A meal off plan doesn't mean I failed and I can continue my desired lifestyle! Progress not perfection! I appreciate your flexibility and how well you explained all of this!Brandthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03751990059165691022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-52211272138265852842017-03-04T01:03:54.230-05:002017-03-04T01:03:54.230-05:00thanksthanksAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04571828795230778384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833628955058077617.post-42838288979195684352016-12-13T14:57:22.218-05:002016-12-13T14:57:22.218-05:00such awesome info I sure appreciate it. Very helpful information. Just one thing, please, please use some other word for those who don't understand ketosis/fat burning. Ketard is one of those manufactured words deliberately bringing retard to mind. However, those with this condition and their families (I'm a Mom of a man with mental retardation) find it so hurtful and denigrating to see this done, making retard an insult. I have no doubt you did not intend to cause pain to any readers and was just trying to be amusing. This isn't about political correctness, just hurtful words.
